Who We Are
Our Organization
Reel Lives is a 501(c)3 using media to support education, empowerment and social change. Our approach consists of an integrated set of programming that achieves both depth and breadth of service via our Core, Graduate and International Programs, Media That Matters Collection and Curricula Development.
“What a pleasure to able to present an award to a film that is so much more worthwhile than what the mass media produces.”
— Documentarian Albert MayslesWith the growing consolidation of mainstream media worldwide and simultaneous expansion of alternative access points for information, advocates, educators, youth and the public are bombarded with messaging. With our recently acquired Media That Matters collection of social justice themed media, and our Curricula Development in partnership with organizations and schools, Reel Lives represents a trusted source; connecting active audiences with media to spur critical consideration of pressing social issues, and gives educators the tools to impact the way youth engage with the world.
“Reel Lives is helping me raise awareness about slavery in my country.”
- Aliou, 20Our Core, Graduate and International Programs support marginalized youth around the world by experiencing a catharsis that is uniquely transformative, and developing skills to improve their livelihoods. Marginalized youth face unique economic and social obstacles; flawed or interrupted education, language barriers, a lack of skills for employment, exclusionary social environments, and lack of a platform to advocate for their own cause. These factors put our young people at a serious disadvantage in terms of their individual and collective development. By providing direct services to marginalized youth, Reel Lives gives a platform to young people living on the fringes of society, who are often spoken about, but rarely heard from.
